New York study indicates hydroxychloroquine inefficiency in severe cases of Covid-19

Preliminary data released by the New York State Governor indicates that there was no improvement in mortality among patients treated with the drug.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced preliminary data from a large study in progress with 600 patients in 22 hospitals using hydroxychloroquine, a drug that has been the focus of the Brazilian and United States governments in treating Covid. -19. Preliminary results point to the inefficiency of the drug in the most severe cases of the disease.

According to Cuomo, the reports that came to him are not encouraging, as reported by CNN. Results showed no improvement among patients who received hydroxychloroquine in combination with the antibiotic azithromycin or when administered alone to the patient.

David Holtgrave, dean of the School of Public Health at New York State University in Albany, noted that there was no statistically significant gain between medicated patients and those who received conventional treatment, without the remedy. However, it is worth noting that the research has not yet been published or reviewed by other scientists.

On the positive side, at least research has failed to find a link between medication and an increased risk of developing heart problems, which has been seen in other studies around the world. In Brazil, Fiocruz discontinued studies after finding risks with chloroquine, the most toxic variation of hydroxychloroquine; Sweden and France were other countries that reached similar conclusions.

Holtgrave’s expectation to publish the results next week, with more data. The research, when completed, will take into account the outcome of the treatment of 1,200 Covid-19 patients, making it one of the largest studies ever conducted on the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine in treating the disease.

However, the researcher does not attempt to establish his study as definitive on the subject, since it does not follow the famous “gold standard”. The research is defined as an “observational study” since it does not have randomized control groups, which aggregate data and information on the subject, but cannot present really conclusive results.
