The MPF-RJ (Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro) opened an investigation to verify the claim of the money changer Dario Messer in his award-winning statement that he was warned about police operations.

In the complaint documents to which Twitter had access, Messer admits that he knew in advance of an operation to arrest him and other money changers in 2018. He even said that he personally warned currency exchange traders in Rio about impending action.

The document on the money-changer’s testimony, however, does not name or reveal further details of the alleged network of informants. Wanted by TwitterMesser’s defense declined to comment.

Messer also said that his former partner Najun Turner would have “friends at the PF” in São Paulo. From there, the warning about the 2018 operation and “several” others that were fired at the money changers would have started; Messer did not specify which ones.

The PF reported that “any news of functional deviation that may arise is investigated by the institution.” He also noted that he does not comment on any ongoing investigation.

Wanted by TwitterTurner’s defense declined to comment.

The Lava Jato working group at MPF-RJ (Rio de Janeiro Federal Public Ministry) confirmed that there are ongoing investigations into such leaks. “For the sake of the investigations themselves, we cannot comment,” he said.

As messer leaks

The operation carried out in 2018 to arrest Messer and other money changers was Câmbio, Desligo. The action was the stage of the Lava Jato operation with the highest number of arrest warrants issued: 43.

Messer said in a plea that he learned of the operation and therefore fled to Paraguay. It was one of the 12 doleiros that were not located by the PF.

In return, Desligo was not the only police operation Messer escaped from. In 2009, the Friday the 13th operation was launched, in which his arrest was also decreed.

Messer was not seen by the police at the time. Anyone in contact with the money changer stated that, at that time, he took refuge in Israel because he also learned of the action against him. He only returned to Brazil when he obtained a habeas corpus in court.
