BRASÍLIA – Vice President Hamilton Mourão described the death of João Alberto Silveira Freitas, a 40-year-old black man, as “regrettable” and he was brutally beaten to death by two white security guards in a supermarket in Porto Alegre. However, Mourão said he did not see racism in the case because, according to him, there is no racism in Brazil.

Initially, Mourão stated that the security team at the site was not “fully prepared”:

– Unfortunate. At first, security (I was) totally unprepared for the activity that I have to do – said the vice president, arriving at the Planalto Palace in the early hours of this Friday afternoon.

When asked if he saw racism in the case, he replied that this is something they are trying to “import” into Brazil:

– No. For me, in Brazil there is no racism. This is something they want to import here to Brazil, it doesn’t exist here.

Then, he reinforced that he does not see racism in Brazil and made a comparison with the United States.

– I tell you very calmly: there is no racism. I tell you this because I lived in the United States. Racism is there. I lived in the United States for two years. At my school, where I lived there, people of color were separated. I’ve never seen it here in Brazil.
