Vice President Hamilton Mourão said on Monday (16) that it is not possible to “debit” the results of the municipal elections to President Jair Bolsonaro. Mourão argued that Bolsonaro has no party and “did not advance head on” in the campaign.

Out of 13 mayoral candidates supported by Bolsonaro, nine were not elected, two won in the first round, and two went to the second round (see results below). Although Mourão said that the president did not participate in the elections, in the final stretch of Bolsonaro’s campaign he made his living in the Alvorada Palace to ask for votes from his candidates for mayor and councilor.

Mourão also affirmed, in an interview upon his arrival at the Planalto Palace, that the “traditional center parties were the big winners” of the first round of the elections.

“Nothing can be charged in relation to President Bolsonaro because he did not enter this election. He supported some candidates there, very little, but no, you know that the president does not have a party, so without a party structure it is difficult for you to participate in an election, “said Mourão.

The vice president also said that, in his opinion, the municipal elections showed that the majority of voters opted for traditional politicians.

“What I saw are also more traditional politicians, better known, those who were elected there in the first round in the big cities, and those who are competing for the second round. This is a reality, you cannot escape from that”, said. .
