BRASÍLIA – Vice President Hamilton Mourão said Wednesday that police and other security agents must “understand the fiscal situation” in the country and “give their share of sacrifice.” Mourão commented on the articulations to remove professionals from the area of the so-called Emergency Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC), which avoids an increase in salaries and progression in times of financial crisis and allows the return of the payment of emergency aid.

I think there has to be a communication about it so that people understand it.
Police officers criticize the statement
Mourão’s statement was criticized by representatives of the security forces. In a press conference promoted by the Brazilian Police Union (UPB), which represents the police entities of various segments of the country, the institutions stated that the category has always had its share of sacrifice.
– In the PEC of Social Security, we did not see him as Vice President of the Republic demanding the sacrifice of the military categories. We saw in all moments of hardening of the police who are at the forefront of the battle at all times, even in the pandemic, declarations of the federal government saying of contributions, of the need for the categories to give their share of participation – he said. The category did not specify what kind of reaction it would take, but ruled out the possibility of a strike. The argument is that with the lack of personnel and strict compliance with what the law says, public security in Brazil is already paralyzed.

Police forces strongly criticized the government, saying the management is playing against officials and security for failing to deliver on promises to strengthen the category. Dissatisfaction, however, is not a sign of interruption.

Agents still complain about the treatment received by security professionals who continue to work despite the health crisis in Covid-19, but are not considered a priority group for vaccination.
Bolsonaro defended the armor
In the early hours of Wednesday, the Chamber of Deputies approved, in the first round, the main text of the Emergency PEC. During the day, the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), indicated that the deputies would keep the text already approved by the Senate, without concessions to the corporations.
Now, the parliamentarians have yet to analyze the deletions of the text, which can dehydrate the PEC. In recent days, President Jair Bolsonaro has defended the shielding of security professionals. He expressed support for the removal of the category salary freeze. On the contrary, the economic team had a pulse to maintain the austerity of the PEC.
In the morning and Tuesday afternoon, the negotiations of the deputies linked to public security were to remove from the proposal the provisions that provide for the prohibition of automatic promotion of public officials in the event of a fiscal crisis. Supported by the opposition, the measure would benefit all officials and not just the public security category.
