Vice President Hamilton Mourão said on Friday (13) that “as an individual”, he recognizes that Joe Biden’s victory in the US presidential elections “is increasingly irreversible.”
Mourão made the statement in an interview with Rádio Gaúcha. The vice president was asked if he personally recognizes Biden’s choice, as the Brazilian government has yet to congratulate the Democratic candidate for winning the race against incumbent President Donald Trump.
“As an individual, I admit it, but you have to see that I don’t answer for the government. As an individual, I believe that Joe Biden’s victory is increasingly irreversible, “he said.
The vice president said he believes that “soon” Brazil will recognize the result of the elections.
Jair Bolsonaro has yet to make a statement on Joe Biden’s victory
Mourão considered that he is not responsible for the Brazilian government, so the decision to recognize or not Biden’s victory must be made by President Jair Bolsonaro, a declared fan of Trump.
Trump has yet to admit defeat. Without presenting evidence, the Republican says there was fraud and tries to reverse the result in court.

On Friday, China sent congratulations to Biden on his election as the 46th president of the United States. The statement came nearly a week after the Democratic candidate’s victory was announced.
“We respect the choice of the American people. We send our congratulations to Biden and Harris,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, also citing Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
Most world leaders congratulated Biden and Harris later on Saturday, when the US media projected the Democratic victory.

Mourão was asked in the interview if the Army was embarrassed by Bolsonaro’s statement, which said this week that “when you run out of saliva, you have to have gunpowder.” (see video below). On the occasion, the president referred to the possibility that the country is subject to sanctions for deforestation in the Amazon.

“Once again I tell you, you know, this is a figure of rhetoric, many times it is a matter of verbal exaggeration caused by the moment or by the situation of the moment,” said Mourão.
The vice president declared that there is no “tension” between Brazil and the United States: “Maybe it’s more, let’s say, maybe some kind of flash in the pan.”
According to Mourão, the Brazilian Armed Forces “never waged war on anyone”, since Brazil in history has always been attacked.
“We never attack anyone. Our Armed Forces have a strategy, in particular the Army, based on presence, that is, presence throughout the national territory and deterrence, ”he explained.
Mourão preached “calm” to await the actions of the US government in relation to the Amazon. Still as a candidate, the president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden, said that he will seek to “organize the hemisphere and the world to provide 20,000 million dollars for the Amazon.” The Democrat also said that Brazil could face “significant economic consequences” if it does not stop “destroying” the forest.
“Let us remember the following: the candidate’s rhetoric is one thing, the job of President of the Republic is quite another,” said Mourão.
