Vice President Hamilton Mourão said on Wednesday (16) that he was unaware that the data on fires and deforestation published by the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) are public and accessible to anyone.
On Tuesday (15) he affirmed, without citing name or evidence, that “someone” from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) “opposes” the government of President Jair Bolsonaro and prioritizes the disclosure of negative data on fires.
“Here’s the thing: I wasn’t aware of this either, the data is open source. This is part of the transparency. So, any of you who access the Inpe website will get the data that is there, “said the vice president after meeting with the director of the institute, Darcton Policarpo Damião, in the office of the Vice President.
Mourão, who is president of the National Council for the Legal Amazon, said he asked the director of the institute for a qualitative report of this data.
“I don’t care about quantitative data, right? From ‘xis’ sources of burning or deforested kilometers ‘xis’. I need the qualitative data, an intelligence analysis, ”he said.
According to him, qualitative analysis should not be open data because it is intelligence information to combat environmental crimes. And he said he can also use the data to show the situation in the Amazon to the international community and the press.
“We can publicize, summon the press and show the layers. It is more reserved data. It is that story, we have to respond many times to the international community, to investors. So we have to show reality so as not to remove that characteristic. that is totally out of control, “he said.
The vice president also said that he asked the director of Inpe to explain to users of the institute’s system where the numbers are released and what each available data means.
“I spoke with him [para] Let Inpe explain what the focus is, what a ‘pixel’ is to the layman who will get it. It won’t touch anything. This has to be very clear. It just explains what each one is ”, he declared.
Gabeira: ‘Mourão did not know that Inpe’s data is open’
Vice President Hamilton Mourão denied having any intention of hiding the data recorded by Inpe or changing the way it was disclosed.
“It is something that has to be very safe: I am not here to hide data, we are not here to hide data. Whether it is good or bad, it must be shown. I have a responsibility with the Brazilian population, in particular with the Amazon population and In the environment where I worked in my life, there are things that are very expensive, it is honor, loyalty, honesty. I do not give up on this section under any circumstances, “said Mourão.
