BRASILIA – The Vice President of the Republic, Hamilton Mourão, defended yesterday that the government reaches an agreement with the parties to the call center form a parliamentary base in the National Congress. Mourão said that President Jair Bolsonaro is negotiating this coalition and that the positions and the amendments are part of the negotiation between the Executive and the Legislative.

President Jair Bolsonaro has articulated an approach with the so-called centão parties, an informal bloc in the Chamber of Deputies that brings together parliamentarians of the center and center right legends. The group is less known for its party flags and more for its characteristic of allying with different governments, regardless of their ideology.

Amendments and positions

According to Hamilton Mourão, the negotiations for the formation of this alliance involve the distribution of positions and amendments and are carried out by Bolsonaro himself and Minister Luiz Eduardo Ramos, head of the Government Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic.

– I can’t tell you the details. Whether physiological or programmatic. We have to find the best coalition, which is the programmatic one. Of course, in that, the positions and the amendments are part of the negotiation between the Executive and the Legislative, he said. – There is no use trying to cover the sun with a sieve. I think it is more or less being carried out in this way, Mourão added when asked if the agreement was being made based on an agenda of proposals.

The vice president said the president concluded that he made a mistake by not trying to reach an agreement with the parties that formed the center last year. But he denied that Bolsonaro has decided to negotiate with the group’s leaders to anticipate a possible impeachment process.

– What does the class say? “Now he is doing this to escape impeachment, to escape the process.” No. This is not how you are seeing it. It has already concluded that it has to attract these parties, Mourão said.

The vice president also argued that it is impossible for a party to obtain only the majority of the votes in the National Congress, which has 24 parties represented.

For Hamilton Mourão, the government needs the support of at least 300 deputies to approve the affairs sent by the Executive, mainly economic reforms.

– You must go to each of these parts, especially to the center, regardless of the pejorative connotation of the center, and take it to the right field, center-right. A center-right coalition – Mourão explained while participating in a live internet broadcast.
