The Samambaia Jury Court, in the Federal District, sentenced Rosana Auri da Silva Candido, mother of the 9-year-old child Rhuan Maycon da Silva Castro, and Kacyla Priscyla Santiago, the woman’s companion, to 129 years in prison in total for the death and dismemberment of the child in May of last year. The trial was held yesterday and the couple will be responsible for the crimes of qualified homicide, very serious bodily injury, torture, concealment and destruction of the body and procedural fraud. The decision is still subject to appeal.

According to the website of the Public Ministry of the Federal District, the mother of the dismembered minor was sentenced to 65 years, 8 months and 10 days in prison. While the woman’s partner will have to serve 64 years, 8 months and 10 days in prison. Together, the sentences total more than 129 years in prison.

The crime was widely reported in the Brazilian media because after stabbing the boy in the chest and other areas of the body, they both decapitated him alive. They then butchered, pierced the eyes and dissected the skin from the boy’s face.

The couple also tried to incinerate the boy’s body parts on a grill to avoid recognition, but failed, placing the boy’s remains in a suitcase and two backpacks. Rosana threw the suitcase into a sewer near the house where the crime occurred. Residents of the area became suspicious of the couple and called the police. The defendants were caught in the act on June 1, 2019.

A year before the boy’s death, the couple also removed the boy’s testicles and penis at home, without anesthesia or medical supervision. For this reason, both were also charged with serious bodily injury and torture.

During the trial, Kacyla decided to remain silent while Rosana said that she had committed all the crimes, and also explained that the companion had not participated in any of the actions.

Both were arrested the day after Rhuan’s death and, according to the Federal District Civil Police, Rosana had already stated at the police station that she committed the crime against her own son for feeling hatred for the child and not wanting to remember the past with the father of the child. .

The jurors briefly accepted the complaint made by the Public Ministry and considered that the couple planned the murder and the disappearance of the boy’s body. Among the qualifiers for the homicide are “the disgusting motive, the cruel means and the appeal made it impossible to defend the victim.”

The Public Ministry confirmed to Twitter that the decision is still subject to appeal and that both are incarcerated in the Women’s Penitentiary Center of the Federal District.

The report contacted the defendants’ attorney to comment on the decision, but there was no response.

The crime

The defendants were arrested in flagrante delicto on June 1, 2019. According to prosecutor Tiago Dias Maia, the murder was committed premeditatedly. They planned how to kill and hide the boy’s body. The couple waited for Rhuan to fall asleep, then Rosana stabbed the boy in the chest and then landed 11 more blows with the object against the boy’s body. Kacyla helped her partner by holding the child.

After the 12 stab wounds, the mother beheaded her son while he was alive, according to the complaint. The two separate body parts, they tried to burn part of it in a barbecue, but were unsuccessful and decided to divide the body parts into a suitcase and two backpacks.

In the complaint, the prosecutor explained that the mother had a “feeling of hatred” towards her son for the paternal family. The boy’s father, Maycon Douglas Lima de Castro, separated from Rosana after Rhuan was born. After the separation, the boy’s mother fled Acre, where she lived, and no longer contacted her relatives.

Since 2014, the child suffered physical and mental suffering as a form of punishment provided by his own mother and partner. He did not attend school and was not allowed to have relationships with other people and children.

With his girlfriend, Rosana lived in Sergipe, Goiás and the Federal District. Maycon sued the court and obtained provisional custody of Rhuan in November 2015. Despite the decision, the father was never able to locate his son. The father’s family posted the boy’s photo on social media and asked for information about his whereabouts, but they were never able to do so.
