Governor Carlos Moisés (PSL) declared during meeting online with mayors and deputies, late in the afternoon on Friday (11), which does not rule out alternatives to immunize Santa Catarina against Covid-19 – in addition to the National Immunization Plan led by the Ministry of Health, which is priority for the state.

Moisés said that the Secretary of State for Health, André Motta Ribeiro, should deal with Sinovac next week, the company that developed Coronavac in partnership with the Butantan Institute, in São Paulo (SP). It is the same vaccine that appears in the protocol of intentions signed this Thursday by the Federation of Municipalities of Santa Catarina (Fecam).

Another alternative, according to the governor, is a possible association with the Italian government test in Santa Catarina the vaccine that the European country is producing. The matter was already being discussed by the Alesc Health Committee with the Brazil-Italy Chamber of Commerce.
The Health Secretariat is expected to discuss the matter next week with the Italian Embassy.

Fecam wants to participate in both processes, both in the negotiations with Italy and in the talks with Sinovac. The information provided by the entity to the meeting was that, due to contractual clauses, the company cannot attend to the supply of vaccines in Brazil without the participation of Butantan, which has already signed a protocol of intentions with the mayors of Santa Catarina.
The State Government has funds allocated to purchase up to five million doses.
The disclosure of ‘plan B’ occurs after mayors have taken the lead in seeking alternatives and left the state behind. With the movement, the government seeks to regain control of the processes and stops betting all the chips on the National Immunization Plan, which has been the target of criticism for the delay.
However, a federal government move may make it impossible for the state to purchase vaccine doses. A Provisional Measure is expected to request any vaccine imported or produced in Brazil, to be used in the National Plan. In that case, the acquisition becomes harmless.
