More than 100,000 vehicles have already passed through the roads of the Anchieta-Imigrantes System (SAI) bound for the coast of São Paulo until the beginning of the morning of this Saturday (5). According to the Highway Police, more than a million people are expected in Baixada Santista during the long Independence holiday.
According to Ecovias, the concessionaire that manages the section, some 102.6 thousand descended the Serra do Mar between 00:00 on Friday (4) and 8:00 on this Saturday. Due to the excess of vehicles, Rodovia dos Imigrantes is congested from Km 28 to Km 32 and with slow traffic between Km 51 and 53, at the height of São Bernardo do Campo.
Drivers who decided to travel Friday night faced up to 27 kilometers of congestion in Imigrantes and 12 kilometers in Rodovia Anchieta. Operation Descent (7×3) is in effect, which must continue until 8 pm this Saturday. For the descent the two lanes of Anchieta and the south of Imigrantes are cleared.
According to Captain of the Military Highway Police Moacir Mathias, around 300 thousand vehicles must pass through the Anchieta-Immigration System bound for the coast of São Paulo during the long Independence holidays. To avoid crowding the beaches, at least 400 policemen were dispatched to the region.
The number presented by Mathias is higher than last weekend, in which more than 202 thousand vehicles went down to the region, between Friday (28) and Sunday (30). At that time, there were records of agglomerations on the beaches and the lack of use of protective masks. “If we do a simple multiplication, with four people per car, we would have almost a million more here in the cities of Baixada Santista,” he explains.

To date, the hotels in Baixada Santista have reached 85% of the occupancy rate, within the 60% limit allowed by municipal decrees. The situation is worrying due to the risk of crowds, which can increase the spread of Covid-19. There is an expectation from the sector that this figure will reach 97%.
The data come from a survey carried out by the Union of Hotels, Restaurants, Bars and Similar (Sinhores) of Baixada Santista and Vale do Ribeira. The occupancy survey for the weekend (September 5 and 6) and holidays was carried out with 17 hotels, between Wednesday (2) and Thursday (3). These numbers may still increase due to last minute bookings.
