The corporal of the Military Police Diogo Gomes de Melo, 31, drowned when he tried to save four children who were drowning in the Itanhaém Sea, off the coast of São Paulo, yesterday afternoon. The prime minister was off duty when the accident occurred.
According to the Maritime Firefighters Group, which attended the incident, at around 4:20 pm, the policeman took advantage of the day off with his family on the Suarão beach when he entered the sea to save his 10-year-old stepson and three nephews, everyone. 12 years old, he had been swept away by the waves and was drowning.
He managed to reach two of the children when he was pulled by the force of the water and could not return to the sand strip, disappearing into the sea. The bathers who were on the beach managed to lift the four children out of the water. They do it right.
Searches began to find the policeman. Five vehicles and 11 officers worked on the records. About an hour later, Diogo’s body was found in the sea.
The policeman was rescued by Samu (Mobile Emergency Service) and taken to the UPA (Emergency Care Unit) in Itanhaém, but arrived at the hospital dead.
According to the communication department of the São Paulo State Military Police, Corporal Melo, as he was known, had been with the corporation for 11 and a half years. He was part of the 1st Company of the XIII Metropolitan Military Police Battalion, in the central region of São Paulo, and was in Baixada Santista working to reinforce “Operation Summer”.
The Military Police regretted the death of the policeman and reported that, during his vacation, the policeman was not armed or in uniform.
