US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo did not acknowledge Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the November 3 presidential election and said Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s second term will come after a “smooth transition.”
“We will have a smooth transition to Trump’s second term,” said Mike Pompeo.
The head of US diplomacy told a press conference that he will participate in official trips this week to France, Israel and Turkey, countries that have already recognized the democratic victory (read more at the end of the story).
On Monday (9), Senator Mitch McConell, Republican leader in the United States Senate, did not recognize the Democratic victory and said that Trump “is within his rights” when he seeks irregularities in the electoral process.
In the United States, the election of the president is indirect. For a candidate to win, at least 270 delegates must win the vote in the Electoral College, which will meet on December 14. (see video below).

Trump did not grant victory to Biden and, since trials, he has tried to show that there was fraud in the electoral process, without presenting evidence.
Despite Electoral College votes being counted only in January 2021, Biden has already delivered a victory speech and world leaders have recognized the Democrat as the elected president of the United States. The tradition in the country is for candidates to recognize the result of press projections.
On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron said on social media that he called Biden to congratulate him. German Chancellor Angela Merkel also spoke with the American and promised transatlantic cooperation.
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated Biden and said he hoped ties between Ankara and Washington would strengthen. On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu highlighted a strong alliance with the president-elect of the United States.
Jair Bolsonaro (Brazil), Vladimir Putin (Russia) and Xi Jinping (China) have yet to congratulate Biden on the victory. The Kremlin said Monday that Putin will wait for the announcement of the official result of the US presidential election to congratulate the winner because Trump questions Biden’s victory.
