São José dos Campos was hit by a tornado on Tuesday (9). According to the Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (Cemaden), the damage to the city during the storm was caused by the tornado added to a micro-explosion of air, which generated gusts of 95 km / h.

As of Wednesday morning (10), the city had already registered 190 falls of trees and branches, as well as lack of electricity in the neighborhoods and floods. Civil Defense teams and the energy concessionaire continue to act on the facts.

Storm in São José dos Campos:

  • The West region was the most affected, but there is also a record of disorders in the South and Central Zones;
  • São José registered more than 200 falls of trees and branches until this Wednesday morning, but the city still received calls for 156;
  • City council and EDP teams worked to remove trees and restore electricity;
  • The lack of electricity also causes water shortages in the central, eastern, southern and western regions.

The phenomenon was detected by neighbors who shared images on social networks. From the images, Cemaden meteorologist and researcher Giovani Dolif claims that the city was hit by a major storm that formed a tornado. The phenomenon occurs when the cloud sucks in the air with speed, creating that cone shape in the sky.

The tornado could wreak havoc, but in Tuesday’s storm it was added to a micro-explosion, generating strong gusts of wind.

“When the air rises to the cloud with force, it forms the tornado. But when it falls hard, it forms this micro-explosion. The tornado’s damage is limited to where it is, but the micro-explosion spreads over a radial area, ”explains Dolif.

The gusts were 95 km / h and fell more than 100 trees, dragged roofs, smashed windows and left part of the city without electricity.

According to the Civil Defense, the volume of rain was 40 millimeters in the period, a volume considered normal. The biggest impact was caused by the wind, out of the ordinary. Despite this, the agency warns that storms like these are expected, due to the arrival of the end of summer.
