Protesters from various commercial sectors meet this Monday morning (01/11) at the door of the Belo Horizonte City Hall, in the Central Region of the city. They are contrary to the Executive’s decision to only allow the operation of services and establishments considered essential, such as supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations, bakeries and bags.

Thousands of people participate in the event, several with Brazilian shirts and flags and clown noses. Belo Horizonte councilors are also part of the protest against Kalil’s decision.

There is also a honking on the part of those who pass by the place, on Avenida Afonso Pena. BH Trans closed the avenue, in both directions (Mangabeiras and Centro), which is congesting traffic throughout the region.

Shortly before this demonstration, the owners of the gyms were also in the town hall to challenge the decision, justified by the increase in cases of the new coronavirus and the situation of the beds in the BH Intensive Care Unit (ICU). They returned to this new protest and, according to the instructor of the Open Fitness Academy, which is located in the Jardim Amrica neighborhood, West Region of Belo Horizonte, Jamilson Castro, 33, health in Brazil has to be seen beyond the aesthetic. “In my way of thinking, the gym today is a way of taking care of health and goes far beyond aesthetics. I work with dance, with women of different ages and I see the importance of exercising and eliminating any type of illness, ”he said. .

As for the closure, he says that he does not agree with the decision because they are complying with the prevention regulations. “The issue of paralysis is frustrating because we are following all the WHO guidelines. So working makes us happier to be able to share with health, doctors and nurses. It makes people care more about health.” , said.

Last Wednesday (06/01), the mayor of BH, Alexandre Kalil (PSD), using social networks to justify the closing of the business is not essential. According to the mayor, COVID-19 “reached its limit” in Belo Horizonte. The occupancy of beds in Intensive Care Units (ICU), for example, remains at around 80%, in the red alert zone, since the demand has exceeded 70%.

For comparison, the percentage of use in intensive care was 44% in early December. However, it is worth remembering that the city changed the evaluation criteria on December 18. Instead of considering the potential supply, the city began to count only the beds that were actually available to the population.

“They are impressive figures. There was a surprising importation of the disease, because we have cases, today, in private hospitals in BH of an entire family and entire families, who spent Christmas together, (and who today are) infected and hospitalized,” he said the head of the municipal executive.
