Education allows transformations in people’s lives. The proof comes from the interior of Bahia, in the municipality of Tucano, a city with less than three thousand inhabitants. From there to the first line of Covid-19, a disease caused by the new coronavirus. As part of the team of scientists from the Instituto do Corao (Incor), in So Paulo, seeking to develop the Brazilian coronavirus vaccine, the immunologist Gustavo Cabral de Mesquita, 38, was a salesman and saw life improve when he dedicated himself to their studies.
Scientist Gustavo carries the banner of education and science as values that motivated him to change the course of his life, although this did not start very early in his career.
“I worked at the fair, I sold ice creams, fruits, like coconut and mango. At 15 years old, I decided to leave the house and I went to live in Euclides da Cunha, a city near Tucano. And I couldn’t continue my studies. I stopped I studied for three years, I started and did not continue, “he recalls.
However, Gustavo began to notice something in common in people who considered having some success in life: their studies. From then on, he sold what he had and began to dedicate himself only to that. With the money, he paid for the last years of high school and a pre-entrance exam.
Academic trip
First of four children to enter higher education, Gustavo chose to study Biological Cincias, at the Bahia State University (Uneb), Senhor do Bonfim Campus. Thanks to the incentive of a research scholarship, after graduation, he received his master’s degree in Immunology in Salvador, at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). And it didn’t stop there.
In So Paulo, he did a doctorate on the same subject at the University of So Paulo (Usp). Abroad, he continued his studies at the University of Oxford, England, in addition to studying in Portugal and Switzerland.
Among his achievements, Cabral has, among numerous achievements, the development of a vaccine, still in an animal model, against the Zica virus.
Valuing education and science
In addition to continuing to fight the coronavirus, in his positions, Gustavo always defends the encouragement of education and science as a possibility for many other young people to change their reality, giving back to society.
“The path to one of the greatest revolutions in the lives of people who do not have very good living conditions invades university spaces. This promotes a great transformation. Everything changes when we look at university centers and think” here is my place too ” , reflects the scientist
