Meet Jill Biden, America’s New First Lady | 2020 U.S. elections

In a message recorded in an empty classroom of a school where she taught English in the 1990s, the educator exposed injuries of the family and the new president of the United States to defend the idea that Biden could help the country rebuild.

Early life and marriage to Joe

Born in New Jersey, Jill spent most of her childhood in Pennsylvania with her four younger sisters and their parents. Her father, Donald, worked as a bank teller, while her mother, Bonny, was a homemaker.

After finishing high school, he went on to study fashion merchandising, but gave up and decided to graduate from the University of Delaware in English. She attended college with her first husband, Bill Stevenson, whom she divorced in 1975.

Jill even did modeling work (a title she rejects) for an agency. “I must have done five jobs that pay me like $ 20,” she said in an interview with Vogue magazine in 2008. “But I wasn’t a model,” she insisted.

Joe Biden was delighted to see a photo of Jill in an advertisement posted at a bus stop. Jill’s phone number was not on the list, but Joe’s brother Frankie obtained it from a friend. Then the two made an appointment.

He almost gave up his political career as a senator from Delaware to care for his sons Beau and Hunter, who escaped the accident with serious injuries, but some of his colleagues convinced him otherwise.

“She gave me back my life,” Joe wrote in his memoir “Promises to Keep”, published in 2007. “It made me start to think that my family could be whole again.

Four years later, in 1981, Ashley Blazer was born, the couple’s first daughter.

Jill graduated from the University of Delaware in 1975 and began her career as a substitute teacher in local public schools and in a psychiatric hospital. Later, she earned two master’s degrees, one in reading and one in English, while working and raising the family with Joe.

For 15 years she was a writing teacher at Delaware Technical & Community College Community College.

When Joe Biden was named Barack Obama’s running mate in 2008, it was known that she joined her husband on the election campaign only on weekends, when he was not teaching. Between stops, he corrected the evidence aboard the field bus as it passed through different US states.

“Jill is always correcting the evidence,” former first lady Michelle Obama said during an interview with People magazine in 2016.

During her husband’s time as Vice President of the United States, Jill continued to work as an English teacher at Northern Virginia Community College.

“Teaching is not what I do. It’s who I am,” he tweeted before his speech at the Democratic convention.

According to the Washington Post, Jill stopped teaching for the first time since 1981 to join Joe in this year’s presidential campaign. Later, in a recent interview with CBS News, he said that he would like to return to teaching even with Joe elected president.

Over the years, Jill has defended her husband against some charges. A controversy that emerged this year addressed Joe’s deal at Clarence Thomas’s 1991 Supreme Court confirmation hearings, in which he was accused by law professor Anita Hill of persistent sexual harassment.

Joe was the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee at the time and was widely criticized for allowing Thomas to testify before Hill. Nor did he accept the testimony of three women who told their own stories about Thomas.

When asked about the controversy in an interview with NPR radio in May this year, Jill defended her husband, adding that she voted against Thomas’ nomination and said it was time to “move on.”

Joe is also accused by women who claim to have been touched inappropriately. When asked about the matter, Jill said her husband had learned that he “needs to make room for people.”

In her recent book “Where the Light Enters,” she wrote that Joe came from a “family of people who like hugs,” but added that women were “brave” in presenting their claims.
