The Education Ministry denied the minister’s speech that students cannot use the January Enem (National High School Exam) note to apply for a place in Sisu in the first half of 2021.

In an interview with TV Asa Branca, affiliated with the Globo network in Pernambuco, Minister Milton Ribeiro said that registration for the show would open at the end of January and that candidates would have to use previous exam scores.

“We are marking the Sisu issue for the end of January. We are going to launch the calendar this week now, so that they take advantage of the notes of the past Enem, ”said Ribeiro, after the delivery of a new building for the UFPE (Federal University of Pernambuco) medical school, in Caruaru.

After the protest of the student entities to the decision, the MEC issued a note at the beginning of the night of this Friday (11) in which it denies the minister’s speech and says that the selection process of Sisu will use the qualifications of the tests conducted in January. According to the ministry, the forecast is that registration in the system will take place in April.

The time problem is that, this year, Enem was postponed due to the pandemic. The Enem tests are scheduled for January 17 and 24, in printed version, and January 31 and February 7, in digital version. The release of the notes is scheduled for March 29.

“The announcement for the selection process of Sisu, referring to the first semester of 2021, will be published after the publication of the results of Enem, in March, coinciding with the conclusion of the second academic semester of 2020 of the majority of public institutions higher education “says the note.

The MEC says that the decision to enroll in Prouni (University for All Program) and Fies (Financing for students) remains before the next Enem is held. Therefore, candidates must use the previous exam grade.

According to the ministry, the anticipation was necessary so as not to interrupt the academic calendar of the planned universities that are due to begin classes in February. The change in enrollment for the two programs was a request from the owners of the universities: the Federal Public Defender’s Office sent a recommendation to the MEC to withdraw from the decision.

Students and educational entities fought a battle with the MEC to postpone Enem in the face of the pandemic and the closure of schools. Since May, they have asked the ministry to organize program schedules, which use test scores, to avoid losses for students.

Private universities pressured the minister to advance the enrollment of Prouni and Fies so that they would not have to change the beginning of the school year. They also wanted the change at Sisu, as most students only try to get a place in scholarship and funding programs after they have failed to be accepted into public universities.

By anticipating Sisu and not allowing the use of the January test note, the assessment is that the ministry would take away the utility of Enem. Portfolio members warned the MEC that emptying the test function would be negative as it would only bring costs and the potential risk of transmission of Covid-19 among the test candidates and organizers.
