The vote on the government’s emergency aid project for states and municipalities broke the relationship between the mayor, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), with the economy minister, Paulo Guedes. The two are no longer in contact, as President Jair Bolsonaro himself revealed in an interview after Luiz Henrique Mandetta resigned from his post as Minister of Health.

Guedes is convinced that Maia works to “exploit” Bolsonaro’s finances and make the country’s economic recovery unfeasible along with the president’s two main opponents: Governors João Doria (São Paulo) and Wilson Witzel (Rio de Janeiro). . And friends, Guedes has repeated in recent weeks that the government will not finance what he calls “electoral spree” under the pretext of fighting the covid-19.

The minister shares the opinion of the president, who, in an interview with CNN, accused Maia of wanting to give a political coup in the government, confronting the governors against Bolsonaro and posing as “prime minister.” The mayor, on the other hand, complains that the Guedes team relied on “false” numbers to avoid more than necessary help to the governors and mayors. In one of the last messages exchanged with Maia, the minister sent a message by cell phone accompanied by an article by economists Marcos Lisboa and Marcos Mendes alerting to the problem that the proposed aid to the states could create. The answer from the other side: “Everything is fine. I will approve it.”

Guedes said there was no agreement. “I am not going to go from here,” declared the Minister of Economy, who has called the House bill “general intrusion of the Republic.” Even with the government’s articulation, there was no agreement in the Senate to vote this week, especially after 25 governors in a letter asked that senators fully approve the bill.
