Margarida Salomão, from the PT, was elected this Sunday (29) the first mayor in the history of Juiz de Fora. He defeated Wilson Rezato, of the PSB, with whom he disputed the second round of the elections. The result was confirmed with 54.98 %% of the polls recorded at 7:14 pm.

At the end of the scrutiny, according to data from the TSE (Superior Electoral Tribunal), Margarida had 144,529 votes (54.98%), compared to 118,349 votes for Wilson, which represents 45.02%.

The Juiz de Fora election counted with 119,497 abstentions, 7,992 white votes and 19,972 null votes.

Margarida Salomão is 70 years old and was born in Juiz de Fora. She is a university professor, graduated in Letters from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), with a master’s degree in Linguistics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and a doctorate from the University of Berkeley, in the United States.

She was dean of the UFJF for two consecutive terms, between 1998 and 2006. In her political career, she was municipal secretary of Administration and Government of the Prefecture of Juiz de Fora between 1983 and 1988. She is a federal deputy for the Workers’ Party (PT) since January 2013, being reelected in 2018 with 89,378 votes.

This is the fourth time that Margarida has competed for the position of CEO. In all the elections, the deputy reached the second round. In the last elections he obtained 42.13% of the valid votes, in dispute with former mayor Bruno Siqueira (MDB).

The deputy mayor is former councilor Kennedy Ribeiro (PV).

The candidate’s government plan consists of four axes, namely: popular citizen participation and social control; urban and rural development in the municipalities and the right to the city; social policies and realization of rights and democratic, ethical and efficient management.

In the document, the candidate informs that “the policies and projects of society have as their objective social justice and the guarantee of freedom for all. Therefore, she defends democratic socialism.”

Margarida also promises the primacy of the State in the conduct of public policies, but for this it will be necessary to invest in training the City Council to carry out the planning and management of public policies, creating channels of participation in the formulation, monitoring and social control .
