Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta announced on Wednesday (8/4) the purchase of respirators through Brazilian companies. According to the Ministry of Health, the production and delivery of 14,000 respirators are planned, half of which are ventilators in Intensive Care Units (ICU) and the other half are transport respirators.

The contract is the result of a partnership between the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Health. “Today we sign the first contract with a Brazilian company for the acquisition and delivery of respirators. We do not want people to need it, but if they need it, we must have at least one perspective of delivering this equipment,” said Mandetta.

According to the minister, virtually all purchases of respirators made in China have not been confirmed. Since the beginning of the disease outbreak, one of the concerns of the Ministry of Health was the purchase of this equipment, since China is the main producer of health supplies.

Mandetta reported that Brazil has four companies that produce respirators with limited production capacity. “One of them, that Magnamed, had the capacity to produce around 400,500 respirators by the end of the year. Magnamed alone closed 6,500 respirators in 90 days,” the minister said.

For the director of Health Logistics of the Ministry of Health, Roberto Dias Lopes, the great challenge of the project is the supply chain. “As much as these large national companies are helping us, we still depend on international parties. That is why the Ministry of International Relations has helped us a lot,” he explained.
