Leonard Shoulders, 33, was waiting for a bus on a sidewalk in the Bronx, New York, when the concrete floor cracked and he fell into a hole. In the fall, he injured his head and one of his arms, but he could not scream, because the place was full of rats and he was afraid that an animal would enter his mouth.
“He couldn’t move and the rats were walking on his body. He didn’t scream because he didn’t want rats to get into his mouth,” Shoulders’ brother Greg White told the Daily News. It took firefighters half an hour to get him out of the hole, and the American was taken to a hospital, where he is admitted in a stable condition.
The accident occurred last Saturday (24), but it went viral this Saturday (31) on social networks. The hole was about four meters deep. The episode brought together the nightmares of two New Yorkers: holes in the sidewalk and the city’s huge rat population, often seen on the subway.
To fix the problem, authorities have tried to poison, trap and even drown the rats. According to the scientists, the mice became more aggressive during the Covid-19 pandemic.
