The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), said in an interview with the Em Foco program with Andreia Sadi, on Monday (7), that he never had the intention of contesting the re-election of the leadership of the Chamber and that his Candidate must represent the independence of the Legislative.

Maia also defended resuming the House voting agenda, interrupted in the electoral period.

This Sunday (6), the Federal Supreme Court (STF) decided to block the reelection to the position of the current presidents of the House and Senate, Maia and Davi Alcolumbre (DEM-AP).

“I think that in the coming weeks we have to take care of the agenda of the Chamber, and without a doubt, in my succession, we need to make a candidate who guarantees this firm movement, a movement that guarantees the Chamber of Deputies free from any interference from another power” , said.

In the interview, Maia said that he always defended and respected the results of the tribute’s trials and that this Sunday’s decision reinforced his intention to build his successor to command of the House.

Asked about who are the candidates to be this candidate, Maia mentioned the deputies Aguinaldo Ribeiro, Baleia Rossi, Eumar Nascimento, Luciano Bivar and Marcos Pereira.

According to the president of the Chamber, the decision of the STF gave more “energy” to the deputies who articulate the dispute for the command of the Chamber. According to him, the candidacy will not be against the government or against anyone, but in favor of democracy and the strengthening of the Chamber.

“So, our candidacy is not against anyone, it is not against the government, it is not against Arthur Lira, our candidate is in favor of democracy, he is in favor of the Chamber of Deputies, and represents this movement that is much broader that the parties of the center and center right, is a movement that will surely reach the majority of the Chamber of Deputies, because everyone saw that in the independence of the Chamber the Chamber was valued, “said Maia.

Congressman Arthur Lira (PP-AL) is the candidate supported by the government of Jair Bolsonaro for the presidency of the Chamber.

Resumption of the voting agenda

Throughout the interview, Maia repeatedly emphasized the need to resume the voting schedule for important House agendas. The negotiations have been under the impact of the electoral period and the uncertainty about whether Maia and Alcolumbre could be re-elected for weeks.

“I think there is something positive, anyway, the government will be able to return to the Chamber to vote what is a priority in the Chamber and the Senate, because the government, in a certain way anticipated my succession, forgot important projects. No one voted for the emergency PEC, “he said.

When defending the prioritization of the approval of the emergency PEC, Maia recalled that the fiscal measure will be necessary for, for example, the expansion of social benefits.

“Now we are going to end the excuses, sit down at the table and approve what is important,” he said.

Maia also said that he has defended with President Jair Bolsonaro that Congress and the government take the same path regarding the purchase and application of vaccines against Covid-19. For the mayor, the discussion can be one of the most problematic for the government.

“This issue may be the most dangerous for the president and he is not looking at it. It may be an issue that greatly disrupts the base of the government, more than the reforms,” he said.
