The elected mayor of Goiânia, Maguito Vilela (MDB), who is hospitalized due to complications from Covid-19, will donate his salary to the public coffers while he is out of office, his press office reported this Saturday (2). Recently in office, the politician has been in an ICU bed at the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo for more than two months.

Currently, the mayor’s gross salary exceeds 27 thousand reais. The net amount of this amount will be donated, since taxes are withheld at source. The guide, according to the notice, is that the money is used in actions to combat Covid-19.

Even admitted and unable to speak due to being tracheostomized, Maguito was sworn in as mayor on Friday (1st), virtually, by electronic signature.

That same day, during the first session of the new legislature of the City Council, the councilors approved the removal of the mayor for the deal. With that, the deputy, Rogério Cruz (Republicans), temporarily assumes the municipal administration.

According to Maguito’s doctor, Marcelo Rabahi, this morning the mayor “maintains his image,” that is, stable and performing muscle strengthening exercises. Follow up with mild sedation, usually just for sleep.

Hospitalization history

Maguito tested positive for coronavirus on October 20. Two days later, he was admitted to a hospital in Goiânia.

On October 27, he was diagnosed with lung inflammation of up to 75% and was transferred to São Paulo. On October 30, Maguito was intubated for the first time after his respiratory condition worsened. On November 8, he resumed breathing without the equipment.

The politician got worse and was intubated again on November 15, the day of the first electoral round. Two days later, the candidate began respiratory treatment with ECMO, a machine that mimics the functions of the lungs.

On December 3, after testing negative for Covid-19, Maguito was transferred to an ordinary hospital ICU bed. After two days, the ECMO was withdrawn.

On the 11th, the politician presented bleeding in the lungs and underwent surgery to control the condition. After the procedure, she had no further bleeding into her organs and returned to a stable condition, with reduced sedation.

In August of this year, Maguito lost two sisters to Covid-19 in less than 10 days. They were 82 and 76 years old and lived in Jataí, the politician’s hometown, located in the southwest of Goiás.
