SBT liked the large audience reached when it showed Flamengo and Fluminense in the final of the Rio de Janeiro championship that year and wants more football. The channel is about to close an agreement to show Libertadores, a tournament that is the most desired by teams and fans and that should even stop being broadcast by Globo.
The possibility of closing the deal was reported by columnist Rodrigo Mattos, from UOL, and also confirmed by Flávio Ricco. And if the contract is signed – everything indicates that this will happen today, according to Ricco – it will be a new masterpiece by Silvio Santos.
The owner of SBT has his ways in front of the cameras, he does a lot of nonsense, but everyone knows that he is too smart. He dodged Globo when he released Casa dos Artistas months before Big Brother’s debut and now, once again, he’s doing well.
In short: Globo broke the broadcasting contract with Conmebol for not agreeing to pay $ 60 million. Recently, the channel tried to negotiate to pay less, but the entity that controls soccer in South America did not agree to lower the values. With that, the contract with SBT should be finalized this Tuesday or at the end of the week.
Silvio’s game is great, after all football is a product that SBT doesn’t have. With the purchase of the competing rights, the channel will be able to attract a new audience, which it does not have today, as well as new advertisers. And more: SBT will reach new audience peaks.
Many people believe that Libertadores would not have good ratings on Ibope outside of Globo, but this is a myth that was overturned this year with the final of the Rio championship played by Flamengo and Fluminense. The game, the only one broadcast by SBT after Globo had contractual problems with Gávea’s team, earned the channel 27.7 points in Ibope (each point is equivalent to 260 thousand households). It is true that this same final, in Globo, would be even higher, possibly reaching the 35-point mark, as happened in previous years. But for SBT, the 27 points were sensational. And, mind you, it was an isolated game and announced a few days before.
With Libertadores, the story is completely different. It will be the entire championship, with matches always on Wednesdays and bringing together the main clubs in South America, only here in Brazil will Flamengo, Santos, Palmeiras, Athletico-PR, Grêmio, Internacional and São Paulo be present. The only thing missing was Corinthians, who generally attract the majority of the television audience when it comes to soccer.
I mean, with a full championship at its disposal, SBT has the opportunity to work well with the audience and attract more and more people to watch the games. It is not a small thing, no. The investment is high, but it can bring a lot of money to the channel.
If the negotiation goes ahead, as it seems, Silvio Santos will have taken another sensational step. A dribble even in Globo, which will stop broadcasting the tournament that is the greatest desire of fans and clubs.
