Leite speaks in a dramatic image and a tidal wave

The governor of Rio Grande do Sul (PSDB), Eduardo Leite, said that the current wave of contagion by a new coronavirus in the state is gigantic and makes the 2020 crises look like waves. In an interview with GloboNews, Leite also used the expression “dramatic picture” twice to refer to what the state is experiencing with the increase in covid-19 cases and the search for ICU beds.

According to Eduardo Leite, “a gigantic wave” began in February, with a contagion rate five times higher than two other waves seen in 2020 in the state, one in June and another in November.

“(The previous waves) seem marolinhas in the face of the incredible wave that is now presented, with a contagion rate five times higher,” he said.

According to Eduardo Leite, currently private hospitals are operating beyond capacity, adapting to serve patients in places such as surgical recovery rooms. Public beds, on the other hand, have an average occupancy of 92% in the state.

Given this situation, the governor said that Rio Grande do Sul will continue with more restrictive measures of the reopening plan for at least one more week, with the possibility of an extension.

Eduardo Leite also justified the delay in responding to the experts’ warnings for the closure of non-essential activities in the state. It is difficult to impose more restrictions at this point, imagine a month ago when they did not have an echo in society ”.

“Even in this dramatic setting it is difficult to convince people, imagine a month ago when we had a crash,” he said.

January holidays

In the interview, the governor also highlighted the possibilities for the increase in cases in the state, including the possible relaxation before vaccination and the influence of more contagious variants. Pending more conclusive studies, he also raised the possibility that tourism has aggravated the situation throughout Brazil.

“The fact is that since February a great wave of contagion has begun. I do not want to make any judgment, the studies will say if they are variants or a reflection of tourism at the beginning of the year. In January, we had many Tens of thousands came here for the RS, dozens of women from Rio Grande do Sul went to other places. This could have been an absurd contagion, ”he said.

Faced with this situation, Eduardo Leite defended his work in relation to the provision of medical care, noting that since last year the supply of beds in the state has more than doubled to combat the pandemic. At the moment, there is a queue of patients waiting for ICU beds in the state.

“More than 1,100 beds have been opened. The effort is being made, but not enough due to the appalling growth,” he said. The speed is very strong and reducing the contagion rate is the only solution ”, he added.

More vaccines and Bolsonaro’s heart

Eduardo Leite believes that, in addition to restrictive measures, only mass vaccination can reduce the rate of infection in the state. For this reason, he demanded an effort from the federal government for the immediate availability of doses.

“It is not enough to announce the purchase of vaccines, it is necessary to have them, to advance deliveries. It does not make sense to have 600 million doses in the second semester, you have to have them now,” said Leite, who asked about the diplomatic efforts of other countries to provide vaccines to Brazil.

“The critical situation in Brazil worries the world, how much this can mean in the appearance of new variants. It is necessary to work with the diplomatic corps, if each country can give a small part to direct Brazil … But that only the federal government and his diplomatic effort to do, “he said.

The governor also criticized the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro (without a party), who yesterday said that the orders to close non-essential activities are “freshness” and “mimimi.”

“What we are experiencing now is inhumanity, which is more than irrationality. I already said that I cannot understand the mind of the president, who seems perverse, despises human lives, but it is more difficult to try to understand the heart of someone who ignores more than 250 thousand dead, which ignores a critical, shameful, shameful situation on the international scene. Brazil is isolated from the world and is killing its own population, “he said.

Also according to Eduardo Leite, by encouraging people not to wear masks and sponsoring medical treatments without proven efficacy, the president acts as if encouraging a person to jump into the abyss. “The attitude belongs to the person, but whoever encouraged it also has this responsibility.”
