Governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) will make a live today, scheduled for 5 in the afternoon, in which he will announce the new decree that will enter into force in the State with the aim of containing the advance of the pandemic. The current decree in force ends today. Before, at 3:00 p.m., there will be a meeting of the Crisis Office. Last Friday, the preliminary map of Controlled Distancing brought for the first time the classification of the black flag, of very high risk of contagion by the coronavirus. In this classification are the regions of Bagé and Pelotas, which represent 28 municipalities.
The black flag is the maximum restriction foreseen by the Controlled Distance model and means that both hospital capacity and the spread of the disease have reached critical levels. Since the beginning of the pandemic, even in the most difficult moments, the black flag had not appeared. The situation is imposed in one of the most delicate moments of the year, with rising curves of pollution and occupation in ICU, combined with the Christmas and New Year’s parties, holidays and Carnival.
The government faces a huge dilemma. If we were to strictly follow the distance figures, which lead to the definition of the flags, the path would probably be to widen the restrictions. But how to determine the closing of sectors two weeks before Christmas, one of the most significant dates for trade? Not by chance, in one of the last demonstrations, when Rio Grande do Sul was completely dyed red again, representing a high risk of contagion, Leite appealed to the population, drawing attention to individual behavior, which would be decisive in defining the next steps that the government would have to take.
