In a vote with its members this Thursday, the French Professional Football League (LFP) formalized what was practically decided: The 2019/20 French Championship will not resume. Therefore, he declared Paris Saint-Germain champion of the season discontinued on March 8 due to the new coronavirus pandemic. It is the third consecutive title for Neymar’s team, the ninth in the club’s history. President Nasser Al-Khelaïfi dedicated the achievement to health professionals.

– We would like to dedicate this Ligue 1 2019/2020 title to the health team and all the frontline heroes, whose commitment and sacrifice for many weeks have won our deepest admiration. We understand, respect and support the decisions made by the French government to end the championship. Health, as the government has always said, should be everyone’s priority, the official said in an official statement from the club.

Olympique de Marseille was credited as second place, qualifying the team directly for the group stage of the next European Champions League. Rennes came in third, securing a place in the Champions League for the first time in its history, albeit in the preliminary round. Instead of four, only two teams were demoted: Amiens and Toulouse.

As the competition was interrupted in round 28 and only PSG and Strasbourg could not meet on March 8, and this difference would not affect any of the key parts of the final standings, the criteria for points per match were applied and practically replicated classification of when the match schedule stopped.

– The classification takes into account a performance index according to the number of points scored in all the games played. To determine the links in this performance index, specific confrontations were used. It is the same rule adopted by the French Football Federation – said Didier Quillot, executive director of the LFP.

Lorient has been declared champion of the second division and will play in the elite next season, as well as in Lens.

Next season in August

One closed, plans for another. LFP officials have said they intend to start the next season of the French Championship’s first and second divisions no later than the weekend of August 22 and 23.

The correct date will still be decided in consultation with the owners of the right to transmit contests.
