A noncommissioned officer of the Military Police and a civilian police officer were arrested this Wednesday in an operation of the Federal Police (PF) against international drug trafficking at the Viracopos airport, in Campinas (SP). The two passed information on security and logistics from the site to the gang that operated through the site.

According to a report by TV Globo Fantástico, Lieutenant José Fernando Gonçalves participated in airport meetings that discussed security protocols and were held frequently. Police officer Éverton Pereira de Souza is designated as an intermediary in negotiations with foreign traffickers.

According to the PF, the criminal group accused of trafficking cooperated employees and appointed people to work in the airport’s logistics areas, in order to facilitate the scheme. The operation launched this week ended with two suspects killed and 35 suspects arrested. Police said they had been monitoring the group for more than a year.

Part of the drug that arrives in Brazil from cocaine-producing countries, such as Bolivia, Colombia and Peru, was destined for the São Paulo airport in the interior. From there, they went to consuming countries on the European, Asian and African continents.

The two police officers can be charged with being related to a criminal organization. Both will submit to the internal affairs of their respective corporations.
