With the backstage already agitated in recent days by the Covid-19 outbreak, the Flamengo board of directors is experiencing a new crisis off the field. President Rodolfo Landim was the target of harsh criticism from the fans, and also internally, after the decision to fire the communication official who published the photo of the players on the plane, on the way back from Ecuador to Brazil.

The image generated controversy for showing the athletes grouped together and without a mask, even after positive tests in the squad. In an interview with SporTV, when asked about the publication in Rubro-Negro’s official networks, the agent said that ‘nobody takes photos with a mask’ and affirmed that he himself removes his mask and holds his breath when he goes to pose for the photos. Hours later, however, he ordered the removal of the member of the communications department.

The attitude provoked almost immediate protests, both from the fans and the councilors. In social networks, the rojinegros did not hide their indignation over the case, the president even being the target of insults. “Inhuman” and “cowardly” were some of the words used in the messages.

Multi-champion on the court, however, this is not the first crisis outside the sport that the current leadership is going through. Since the beginning of last year, inclusive, the summit has accumulated situations of this type.

Even in the first months after the inauguration, the conduct of conversations with the families of the fatal victims of the fire in the Ninho do Urubu -which happened in February of last year- and the development of the tragedy caused immense wear and tear among the management and fans, in addition to generating lawsuits before organizations such as the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro and the Public Defender of Rio de Janeiro.

Subsequently, to a lesser extent, other items were also on a similar shelf. The meeting with President Jair Bolsonaro (without a match) with the pandemic showing alarming figures, the movement for the return of football, and the decision to charge for the transmission of the Copa Río semifinal, against Volta Redonda, were some facts that provoked rejection of the red-blacks and internal discussions between political groups.

Now, the summit tries to stop a problem that every day gains a new chapter. After the refusals of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) to postpone the match with Palmeiras, scheduled for tomorrow (27), by the Brazilian, the club again called the field looking for such a change in calendar.

The list of coronavirus cases increased yesterday (25) and the possibility of new cases appearing soon is not ruled out. Before a trump card, the protocol used by the club became the hot seat and the center of countless debates.
