The TJRJ (Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro) today ordered the release of former federal deputy Cristiane Brasil (PTB-RJ) and former Secretary of Education of Rio Pedro Fernandes (PSC). Both are suspected of having participated in a fraud scheme between 2013 and 2018 that diverted approximately R $ 120 million from the government and the city of Rio.
Judge Luciano Silva Barreto, of the 26th Criminal Court of Rio de Janeiro, also extended the decision to Flávio Chadud, owner of Servilog Rio, a company suspected of benefiting from rigged bids; Flavio Salomão Chadud, his father; Mario Jamil Chadud, head of the Civil Police, and João Marcos Borges Mattos, former director of financial administration of the Leão Foundation 2. 3.
In the sentence, the judge asks the six to comply with the following acts:
- Assistance to Justice until the 10th of each month to inform and justify the activity;
- Prohibition of access, by any means, to commercial companies involved in the original criminal action;
- Prohibition of maintaining personal, telephone, virtual contact, e-mail, telephone applications (WhatsApp, Telegram and others) among themselves and with other defendants, witnesses or employees of the investigated companies;
- Prohibition to change address without prior communication to the Court;
- Night at home daily pick up from 10 pm;
Those involved were arrested on September 11 during Operation Catarata, which carried out five preventive arrest warrants and carried out search and seizure orders at homes in the neighborhoods of Copacabana, Recreio dos Bandeirantes and Barra da Tijuca.
Cristiane Brasil alleged ‘political persecution’
Upon surrendering, the daughter of former deputy Roberto Jefferson -who was a candidate for the City of Rio- protested in a video broadcast on their social networks.
“It is absurd that an old complaint, from 2012, 2013, an order of preventive detention against me, with the days before the elections, against me and the other two main candidates, is being carried out. At a time when my candidacy is getting stronger, ”said Cristiane Brasil.
Cristiane, who was even considered a minister in the government of Jair Bolsonaro, said at the time that she was a victim of “political persecution.” During the incarceration period, the PTB withdrew Cristiane’s candidacy for the city of Rio.
Pedro Fernandes’ press office said he was “outraged by the arrest warrant.” The former state deputy – who during his house arrest was exonerated by the interim governor of Rio, Cláudio Castro (PSL) – said he was confident that his innocence would be proven.
Fernandes, a former state deputy, turned pretrial detention into a home by presenting a medical certificate showing that he was recovering from covid-19.
