Judge Elton Pupo Nogueira, of the 2nd Treasury Court of the State of Belo Horizonte, denied today (10/6) a request to block about R $ 26.7 billion from the mining company Vale for the damages caused by the Brumadinho tragedy.

The request had been made by the Federal Public Ministry and Minas Gerais, the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation (AGU) and the Public Defender’s Office of the Union and Minas Gerais.

The bodies allege that there was a loss of more than R $ 45 billion with the rupture of the Feijo mine in Brumadinho, in January 2019. The tragedy left 270 dead, 11 missing and a trail of destruction.

For the institutions, the public civil actions that are processed in Justice against the mining company are weakened by the lack of guarantees, so the blockade would be justified.

The magistrate, however, understood that there were no reasons for a new blockade, since in his opinion the company “has been actively cooperating and spending money and resources to repair all the damages identified during the judicial process.”

Vale “has already financed new means of supplying water to the city of Par de Minas and the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte and, with good reason, injected close to one billion reais into the economy of the Brumadinho region through an emergency payment. correct and correct to more than one hundred thousand people “, added the judge.

He also pointed out that, in January 2019, the Minas Gerais judge already determined a blockade of R $ 11 billion of the company and that there are still amounts in liquid guarantees available to the Justice.

A conciliation hearing between the parties was scheduled for October 22.
