Orlando Duarte, a former sports journalist with a strong presence on the Jovem Pan and Bandeirantes radio stations, died this morning at the age of 88. The information was confirmed by Milton Neves, blogger from sports.
He, who has covered more than ten World Cups, contracted covid-19 three weeks ago and has been hospitalized since then. Duarte has also suffered from Alzheimer’s since 2018.
On television, the journalist went to Globo, SBT, Band and Culture; in the latter, he even held a director’s position.
In an interview last year for TwitterOrlando’s wife Conceição Duarte spoke about the Alzheimer’s drama experienced by her husband. She was responsible for writing on the journalist’s social networks, the author of more than 30 books throughout her career.
“Since the World Cup, he has been disconnected from football a lot. I ask him and he does not answer, he does not know who won. So it would not be fair for me to write and people think: ‘If it is reasonably logical, why is it not working? Then I started to not sleep, I got worried and concluded that I needed to tell [sobre o Alzheimer]. It was 1 in the morning and I decided to write and speak, because people called on her birthday and I said I was sick. But if you are sick, get better, right? It is not the case. This experience is painful because there is no going back, “Conceição said.
