The world was different when Jorge Jesús, Brazilian champion and liberator with Flamengo, began the process of renewing the contract with the club. The technician will return to Brazil this Friday, after the holidays in Portugal, aware that he will not have the expected increase, due to the economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. More than that, he returns in a word with the club that will remain until 2021.

“He is doing very well in Flamengo. It is about reaching an understanding, ”says one of those involved in the negotiations. They will really resume with the return of the coach to Rio, but the values suggested by Jesús and his representatives have changed levels. Currently, it receives around R $ 1.5 million, and the initial order after a year of titles and registrations was close to double the value.

Flamengo’s proposal, even at the start of the pandemic, suggested an increase to the R $ 2 million range for Jesus, not counting the technical committee. And it also considered that the price of the euro was below R $ 5. Today, the currency exceeded R $ 6. If before the board already considered it unfeasible to yield to higher claims by the coach, now, after the dismissal of employees, it is still more reticent.

But the natural way after appreciation of almost the entire cast is to do the same with your commander. In the soccer department, there were complaints, after the employees were fired, that the board’s priority was only to keep Jesus. Therefore, paying the technician values above the financial reality and the budget, already fully committed this year, is seen internally as a shot at the foot of the austerity seen in recent years.

The understanding that is still missing is to set the value of the euro that will guide the payments of Jorge Jesús and his technical commission made up of seven professionals, all paid in foreign currency. The idea of the meeting was to use the December price, around R $ 4.50. And keep the proposal made to Jesus, with bonds for titles as generous as last year, when the Lord received R $ 9 million for Libertadores and Brasileiro.

At the moment, Flamengo does not have a plan B. Thought was given to Marcos Silva, a Portuguese player who worked for Everton in England last year.
