Johnny Depp was forced by producer Warner Bros. to abdicate his participation in the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” franchise of the Harry Potter film universe. The resignation comes days after Depp lost a legal battle against The Sun newspaper, which reported on the actor’s alleged violence against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

In a post on social media, Depp said his departure was requested by the producer. He thanked “the support and loyalty” of those who sent him messages and said that he is willing to fight the accusations made by the English tabloid.

“I would like to say that Warner Bros. asked me to resign my role as Grindewald in ‘Fantastic Beasts’ and I respected and accepted the request,” Depp wrote in a message posted on Instagram.

“The surreal judgment of the UK court is not going to change the truth and I confirm that I plan to make the appeal. My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the accusations against me are false. Time.”

Warner Bros. confirmed the departure of the actor and should replace him for the third film in the franchise, still unnamed, scheduled for November 2021.

The case of the sun

Depp sued News Group Newspapers (NGN), which publishes The Sun, and one of its journalists, Dan Wootton, over a 2018 article according to which the actor was violent towards his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard.

Both Depp and Heard testified before Judge Andrew Nicol during a three-week hearing in London High Court, exposing their tumultuous personal lives and making allegations of gross domestic abuse, drug use and extramarital affairs.

When announcing the decision, on Monday (2), Nicol affirmed that the arguments presented by the newspaper to describe the actor’s behavior were “substantially true”. Depp has always vehemently denied allegations of being violent towards Heard.
