On Thursday (10), at an event in Porto Alegre, President Jair Bolsonaro said that Brazil is “experiencing a small end to a pandemic.” That’s not what the numbers of deaths and cases of the disease and doctors on the front line say.

“The scenario is bad, the emergencies are full, the patients are serious,” says a doctor.

“Our team is exhausted, it has been a very exhausting job,” says a doctor.

Doctors talk about the reality they face: a time when the pandemic is getting worse. The first death of Covid in Brazil was registered in March. Deaths from the disease increased until June, when the curve plateaued until it began to fall in August. In November, the number of deaths increased again and continues on an upward trend. In recent days, the daily moving average has returned to more than 600 deaths. Twenty-one states and the Federal District are increasing in the moving average of Covid deaths. It is the highest number since the media consortium began monitoring the cases.

“We are experiencing an increase in the number of cases, an increase in the number of hospitalizations, that hospitals are full, they run the risk of not being able to actually answer calls. This is not the end of the pandemic. The end of the pandemic will happen when we see the opposite, ”says microbiologist Natalia Pasternak, from the Questão de Ciência Institute.

“We are admitting people who never left home, who got sick because someone came home with the disease. This is the panorama of what we are experiencing. I hope people believe what my colleagues and so many other capable people have been warning me about. We are working with reality data ”, says Margareth Dalcomo, pulmonologist and researcher at Fiocruz.

“We are facing a situation that is still serious, a situation that is getting worse, so minimizing the situation does not contribute effectively. The higher the number of infected, the higher the number of deaths ”, evaluates the infectologist Celso Ramos, president of the Rio de Janeiro Society of Medicine and Surgery.

Compared to the world, Brazil is the third country with the highest number of cases of the disease and the second with the highest number of deaths. Among the countries most affected by Covid, Brazil has the highest mortality rate.

The concern of scientists, researchers, doctors, now, is mainly with the holidays. Family gatherings, social gatherings can increase the risks of Covid transmission and further aggravate the disease in the country.

“To clarify again to the population how important it is to wear masks, how important it is to avoid crowds, prioritize outdoor activities and not indoors. All this must be repeated, always inviting the population to participate in this process, to be an active part of this process to contain the pandemic. And do not dream that the pandemic ended without combining with the virus, ”says Natalia Pasternak.

“We know that the great solution will be when the vaccines arrive. But, for that, you still need a little more time. We all need to collaborate. We need this civic awareness that we will have other Christmases, we will have other new years and that we need to be alive for that, ”says Margareth Dalcomo.
