A new earthquake hit the cities of Recôncavo Bahia in the early hours of Monday (31), more precisely at 3:42 am. The tremors had an epicenter in the city of Amargosa, with a magnitude of 3.5 on the Ritcher scale, and were felt in at least five other cities: Varzedo, Castro Alves, São Miguel das Matas, Brejões and Elísio Medrado. The information is from the Seismological Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) and was confirmed by the mayor of Amargosa, Júlio Pinheiro.

“This new tremor was registered by the laboratory and also by the population. It was around 3 am. Many people reported waking up scared, ”says the Mayor of Amargosa, Julio Pinheiro.

According to Pinheiro, two other earthquakes struck the city on Sunday (30). The first was recorded around 7:30 am with a magnitude of 3.7 and the second shortly after, at 8:10 am with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Ritcher scale. The origin would have been in the rural area of ​​the municipality, between the communities of Alto Seco and Corta Mão, near Mutuípe, the epicenter of the first earthquake yesterday, which had a magnitude of 4.6 and was felt in 43 cities of Bahia.

Despite causing cracks in the walls and floors of some neighbors’ houses and a church, the mayor of Amargosa said there was no major damage. “Since yesterday our Municipal Guard team has been on the field. There were breakdowns in houses such as cracks in walls and ceilings, but no serious cases, ”confirmed the mayor.

Hildete, who lives near Elísio Medrado, felt the shaking around 3:45 am. “I was sleeping and I felt that my bed was shaking,” said the resident, on the website of the Seismology Center of the University of São Paulo (USP), which records seismic shocks.

In Varzedo, Tainá Silva Santos commented that he felt the tremor at 4:14 am. “It is already the second day in a row that we feel the shaking, it has become frequent,” he reported.

Still at the USP Seismological Center, an anonymous person reported feeling the earthquake in São Miguel das Matas: “I woke up to the sound of the shaking and the house swaying.”
