Tiago Nunes’s work at Corinthians, even in a moment of transition, was terrible. The lack of conviction, mixed with the results that did not come, culminated in his resignation. It’s a fact: Corinthians is not doing well and had little brilliance under their command.
For the more conservative fans, the biggest mistake was changing the style of play. Maintaining the “Carille style” was fruitful, but always short-term. The 2017 team held the bar until August, but from then on they made a decent relegation campaign. The 2018 team played well in the final stretch of the Paulista Championship, but lost the rest of the year. In 2019, if it hadn’t been for the release of Junior Sornoza’s almanac in Majestoso, we probably would have changed coaches before the middle of the year.
Selective memory is dangerous here. We stick to the titles and we forget the turbulence that was present in the years of the conquests. And with the weak 2020 of Tiago Nunes at Corinthians, the impetus of most fans is to ask for the return of the pillars of the years of conquests, such as Ralf, Jadson and Fábio Carille himself.
It is important that the fan understand the following: there is no single method to win titles. Tiago Nunes’ failure shouldn’t make it impossible for Corinthians to go after another aggressive-minded manager. Otherwise, we will live attached to the conservative and unpromising idea if we project for the long term.
Turning the page is the correct term. It is shedding the winning generation of the last decade and beginning to project a future. To draw a parallel with Europe, we can see a Barcelona that was tremendously victorious ten years ago, but that did not adapt its philosophy and today is an example of technical and administrative delay in relation to the rest of the European powers.
The reasoning has to stop being retroactive and point to the future. Corinthians’ big signings are often names that have been successful at the club in the past. It is not that they are weak players, but it would be more interesting to think about the formation of another generation in the club. Design new names, new styles, and a new face.
The aggressive and victorious team of the 90/00 hour turned the page. The winning and reactive team, whose cycle started in 2008, will also have to serve one hour. The change may not be now, but it will come one time or another. And it is very important that the fans understand this.
