The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), said today that “courage” and “irresponsibility” have “limits” when asked about the fact that Brazil has not yet started vaccination against covidity. 19 and the apparent end of the alleged federal government resistance to the CoronaVac vaccine.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Health announced that it had signed a contract with the Butantan Institute, in São Paulo, to receive 46 million doses of CoronaVac by April and another 54 million doses by the end of the year. The vaccine is developed by a Chinese company in association with Butantan, linked to the São Paulo state government, which in turn is commanded by President Jair Bolsonaro’s political rival (without a party), Governor João Doria (PSDB).
During a visit to Teresina, in Piauí, a journalist asked Maia how she sees the “delay” in vaccination and the “resistance” to CoronaVac. “Finally, the government [federal] accepted. Is it a political issue, is it technical? “, I ask.
“I think bravery always has a limit, right? And irresponsibility, fortunately, too. With the loss of life. Because every day of delay in vaccination, we have a thousand deaths per day. […] It was a great irresponsibility. In the narrative, there remains a great irresponsibility in relation to the health of Brazilians. But, fortunately, yesterday, the day we unfortunately reached 200 thousand deaths, the government decided, for the first time, to assume the importance of the Butantan vaccine, which is the one that is ready, approved. [ainda não liberada pela Anvisa]”Maia declared.
The mayor once again praised Butantan’s work, criticized the “denialism” of the federal government and affirmed that, therefore, an independent Chamber of Deputies is important.
He was in Teresina today with his candidate to succeed him in charge of the Chamber, Baleia Rossi (MDB-SP), to talk with the state governor, Wellington Dias (PT), and parliamentarians.
Baleia preaches the idea of being the “independent” candidate, since his main opponent in the dispute is Arthur Lira (PP-AL), supported behind the scenes by the federal government.
Rodrigo Maia also criticized Jair Bolsonaro’s statements about alleged fraud in the 2018 elections, in which he was elected President of the Republic. Yesterday, Bolsonaro said, again, without proof, that the election was rigged and that “if we do not have the vote printed in [20]22, a way of auditing the votes, we are going to have worse problems than the United States ”.
Maia said it was important for political parties to challenge Bolsonaro in court. Parliamentarians of the PT and Pros have already asked yesterday that the PGR (Office of the Attorney General of the Nation) and the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) investigate Bolsonaro’s statements.
“He made a serious attack on the TSE, on his ministers, and he needs to give a clear answer on where that seriousness is. Because, at least, if he does not respond, it is a crime of injury. It is important that the president stop using this rhetoric of threat, of attack, and that all of us, at that time, especially the political parties that also represent democracy, must question the president every time he utters phrases that threaten our democracy, as President Trump threatened American democracy, “said Maia .
