Iran announced on Saturday (12) that it executed the young fighter Navid Afkari, who was sentenced to death for the murder of a public official during the 2018 “uprisings”, news that had a strong impact on the entire planet and the International Olympic Committee (COI). )

The sentence of “qesas”, which is the “talion law”, a penalty of “retribution”, was carried out this Saturday in the Shiraz penitentiary, in the south of the country, the attorney general of the country informed state television. the province, Kazem Musavi. .

According to the judicial authority, the 27-year-old Afkari was convicted of “involuntary manslaughter” of an employee of the Shiraz public water company, who was stabbed to death on August 2, 2018.

According to friends and family, the wrestling champion was convicted on the basis of a confession obtained after torture.

Like other cities in Iran, Shiraz was the scene on August 2, 2018 of demonstrations against the government and the economic and social situation of the country.

– IOC shock –

The death penalty was applied “at the insistence of the victim’s family,” said the province’s attorney general.

But according to Afkari’s lawyer, Hasan Yunesi, a meeting with the victim’s family was scheduled for Sunday to “apologize” and avoid the death penalty.

“They were in such a rush that they denied Navid his right to one last visit,” Yunesi wrote on Twitter.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressed “shock” at the news of the execution of the Iranian fighter.

“It is deeply regrettable that the appeals of athletes around the world, and all the work of the IOC, with the Iranian Olympic Committee, the International Wrestling Federation and the Iranian Wrestling Federation, have not achieved their goal,” he added. COI in a statement.

“The execution of the Iranian fighter Navid Afkari is very sad news,” the committee said.

“Respecting the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the president of the IOC, the German Thomas Bach, appealed this week to the supreme leader and the president of Iran in separate letters and asked for clemency for Navid Afkari,” the organization recalled.

The death sentence for the athlete generated controversy and a clemency campaign gained momentum in Iran and other countries.

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, asked Iran for pardon for a “great star of the struggle … who did nothing more than participate in an anti-government demonstration.”

The human rights organization Amnesty International (AI) on Friday expressed grave concern over the “imminent secret execution” of Navid Afkari.

According to Amnesty International, he and his two brothers, sentenced to long prison terms in the same case, are “the most recent victims of Iran’s flawed judicial system.”

Iran, which executed at least 259 people in 2019, is, along with China, the country that uses the death penalty the most, according to Amnesty International.
