Instead of helping states record deaths, Bolsonaro wants war – 03/16/2021

With 2,798 deaths, Brazil once again broke the record for deaths in 24 hours. This reinforces why we are the epicenter of the pandemic and a threat to global health. Two states pulled the figures, also with records: Rio Grande do Sul, with 501 deaths, and São Paulo, with 679.

Both are led by toucan governors who the president sees as possible opponents in his re-election in 2022. And instead of helping these states, which have large cities and are hospital centers, receiving patients from other regions, Jair Bolsonaro decided to fight. São Paulo even had to go to the Federal Supreme Court to free the Union’s resources for financial ICU covid beds. The result of all this: a mountain of bodies.

Instead of establishing a plan to contain the spread of deaths in the national territory, articulate mayors and governors for a process of closure of regions and economic activities, guarantee oxygen logistics, ICU beds and tests for covid and run with the payment From emergency aid, the president of the republic pushes his followers to war.

On Sunday (14), protests by Bolsonaro sympathizers were held in several cities of the country, attacking governors and restrictive measures to combat covid-19 and calling for military intervention and the removal of ministers from the Federal Supreme Court.

In São Paulo, there was a demonstration with a crowd and a caravan on Avenida Paulista. Topics such as “Military intervention with Bolsonaro in power” and “Fora Doria Já, Intervenção Já” were handled by people calling for a military coup and the deposition of the governor.

In Porto Alegre, it was no different. There was also a caravan and a demonstration in front of the Southern Military Command, along the same dark road, with banners that read “The united people will never be defeated. Army Now”, “Former Supreme Federal Court” and “For Eduardo Leite.

The answer came, this Monday (15), in a hearing of the Federal Senate commission that discusses measures against the covid. São Paulo Governor João Doria said he intends to help Bolsonaro be “tried for this genocide” in international courts.

And the gaucho governor, Eduardo Leite, affirmed that “there is no minister who can work with the sabotage carried out by the President of the Republic himself on the necessary measures to combat the coronavirus.”

Toucans also make electoral politics with the pandemic, as this column has reported on other occasions. There is no way to forget, for example, the “BolsaDoria” campaign carried out by the governor to guarantee his election in 2018, much less the delay in the tightening of quarantine in São Paulo despite the increase in cases due to the Bell. from his co-worker, Bruno Pits.

But right now, it is not the two of them who are using the power of the charge against the lives of the people and pushing the workers to the streets with the logic of taking, taking, dying, dying or underestimating the suffering of the families, asking people stop crying and stop “freshness” and “mimimi”.

Surely you have read the analysis in this column and in those of my colleagues in recent days that while Bolsonaro dictates what he can and cannot do in the fight against covid, subjecting health measures to his logical electoral pie, any Minister of Health it will be a puppet in your hands.

For this reason, any new occupant, no matter how well-intentioned, who promises to reduce the number of deaths immediately with the vaccine, is lying. We don’t have enough stocks of immunizers because the president didn’t want to buy them last year. So to stop the escalation of deaths we now have to close the doors.

The states and municipalities are already making the decision to adopt tougher blocks, such as Araraquara and Ribeirão Preto (SP), but individually, with little coordination, which makes them imperfect. The president who must assume this task is against it because he believes that it will create more problems for the economy and, consequently, for his re-election. To justify himself, whenever he can, he says the Supreme Court prevented him from making decisions. He lies, he did not want to.

At the same time, their warlike behavior would hardly allow for sensible articulation with opponents in the name of the common good. He prefers to excite his negative followers, who are his base of support against any attempt to constitutionally remove him from office, even if its maintenance means harm to human life.

I never thought I’d say that, but reelection kills.
