Initial expert report points to suffocation as the cause of death of a black man beaten in a Porto Alegre supermarket | Rio Grande do Sul

According to the IGP, other laboratory tests are scheduled and final reports should be ready in the next few days. The body was transferred to the Departments of Criminalistics and Legal Medicine on Thursday night. The release occurred on the afternoon of Friday (20).

João Alberto Silveira Freitas, 40, was beaten and killed by two white security guards on the eve of Black Awareness Day. He was shopping with his wife when there was a disagreement with a local employee. He called security, who took João Alberto to the parking lot, where the attacks occurred. (watch the video above).

The two attackers, 24-year-old military police officer Giovane Gaspar da Silva and 30-year-old security guard Magno Braz Borges, were arrested on the spot and pre-trial detention was ordered on Friday afternoon.

Magno is an outsourced employee at the supermarket. Giovane is a temporary military policeman and therefore, according to the Military Brigade (as the Military Police is called in RS), could not be working on the site.

David Leal, who took over Giovane’s defense, says his client reported that João Alberto “was upset” and “ran into a lady” at the supermarket. He also said the victim punched Giovane, in the prisoner’s report.

Attorney William Vacari Freitas, who defends Magno, told the G1: “We will await the results of forensics and other investigations.”

The Military Brigade reported that the beating began after a disagreement between the victim and an employee of the supermarket, which is located in the North Zone of the state capital. The victim allegedly threatened to beat the employee, who called security.

Carrefour said in a note that it deeply regrets the case, that it has launched a rigorous internal investigation and has taken steps to ensure that those responsible are legally punished.

The chain, which attributed the attack to the security guards, also described the act as criminal and announced the breach of the contract with the company responsible for the aggressor employees.

Also in note, the Military Brigade reported that the PM involved in the attack is “temporary” and was outside working hours.

According to the statement, his functions in the corporation are limited to “performing internal services, administrative activities and video surveillance” and “external custody of penal establishments and public buildings.” The Brigade did not report what it was doing in the market.
