Chief Raoni Metuktire, 89, a leader of the Kayapó ethnic group, is admitted to a hospital in Sinop, 503 km from Cuiabá, with coronavirus (Covid-19). Raoni is known internationally for defending the rights of indigenous peoples.

In a note, the Raoni Institute reported on the hospitalization on Monday (31). In July, the chief was hospitalized for nine days to treat infections in the intestine.

“The reason was the finding of changes in the rate of leukocytes in the blood and symptoms of pneumonia. Specific tests carried out – CT scan and serology confirmed Covid-19. His condition is good, without fever, breathing normally and without oxygen,” he said. the Institute.

The medical staff of the Dois Pinheiros Hospital confirmed that the Chief had Covid-19 and that the tests show the presence of antibodies.

At the request of the family, it was only revealed that, if the situation remains stable, Chief Raoni will be discharged soon.

Still, according to the institute, age inspires care and Chief Raoni will continue medical assistance until fully recovered.

Raoni Metuktire was admitted to a Colíder hospital on July 16 after falling ill. On the 18th of the same month, he was transferred to Sinop by plane after gastrointestinal complications and dehydration.

According to the Raoni Institute’s management, the chief was depressed after the death of his wife, Bekwyjkà Metuktire, on June 23, a month ago. He had diabetes and suffered a stroke.

He was discharged nine days later.

The indigenous leader is internationally recognized for the struggle he has articulated for indigenous peoples. In 1989, he had a historic encounter with the singer Sting during the First Meeting of the Indigenous Peoples of the Xingu, in Altamira (PA).

The two met in 2009 in the city of São Paulo to discuss the construction of the Belo Monte Plant.

In November 2012, Raoni was received by the President of France, François Hollande, at the Elysee Palace. At that time, the cacique asked for the preservation of the Amazon and the people who live in the region.

Last year, Raoni was called by President Jair Bolsonaro as a “maneuvering piece” used by foreign governments to “promote their interests in the Amazon.”

The statement came after the chief met with French President Emmanuel Macron seeking support for the defense of the Amazon.
