Manaus and Florianópolis registered an increase in Coronavirus; in the capital of Minas Gerais the downward trend stopped advancing

The city of Belo Horizonte is closely watching the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases registered in the cities of Manaus and Florianópolis. The capitals have announced, in recent days, increases in their epidemiological balances, which helps to fuel caution among infectologists who are part of the pandemic confrontation committee in the Belo Horizonte executive.

This week, the transmission rate of Covid-19 (Rt) in Belo Horizonte had a slight increase – until yesterday the city had registered 54 deaths from coronavirus in the last seven days – and therefore no announcement of flexibility or collective of press for this Friday (9).

The Rt rate, which was 0.92 a week ago, registered an index of 1.06 on Thursday (8), which also helps to put infectologists in the spotlight. “We had a downward trend, which stopped and that worries us. Certainly the crowds contribute to this transmission ”, calculates Carlos Starling, member of the infectious diseases committee.

The next announcement, still without a confirmed date, should be about the flexibility of museums and theaters, but Starling explains that any anticipated forecast does not correspond to reality. “We depend on the evaluation of epidemiological behavior. There are risks that the epidemic will return, ”he says.

For him, Manaus and Florianópolis are experiencing a second wave of Covid, and Belo Horizonte must continue to avoid any activity that generates agglomerations, due to the risk of increasing cases. However, the opinion on whether there is a second wave in the cities mentioned is not a consensus among experts. However, in a video posted today on social media, Manaus Mayor Arthur Virgílio Neto said that Covid “has returned and is killing people.”

For comparison, last Wednesday (7) Manaus registered 921 new cases of the disease, while in Minas Gerais the number was 262. In Florianópolis, according to the risk map updated this Thursday (8) by the government of Santa Catarina, the metropolitan area of the capital represents a serious risk for Covid-19. “Any flexibility can generate comings and goings, so we really have to be very attentive to these numbers”, assesses the infectologist.

One of the rates that the city needs to reduce is the cases per 100,000 registered inhabitants in a period of 14 days, but the number is still far from what is considered acceptable. According to Starling, less than 20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants would be the ideal rate. The capital of Minas Gerais currently has an index that varies from 80 to 120 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, the variation depends on the source. “This is something prohibitive”, concludes the infectologist.
