Civil Defense recommends: do not underestimate the force of the waters; check the guidelines
The year 2021 began with three deaths caused by the rains. One of the victims was a 13-year-old boy who was riding a bicycle when he was swept away by the flood on Saturday night, in the Santa Rosa neighborhood, in the Pampulha region of BH. Images from security cameras show that he took refuge in a covered area, but soon after decided to continue cycling. Seconds later, the boy is seen being dragged under a car parked on Líbero Badaró street.
In Capitólio, south of Minas, two women died after being hit by a head of water (a sudden increase in the volume of water due to rain) in a waterfall known as Cascatinha. Sixteen victims were rescued and at least one remains missing.
In addition to these three deaths, the Civil Defense counts three more victims between October and December, due to the current rainy season, a total of six deaths.
Major Eduardo Lopes, superintendent of disaster management of the Civil Defense of Minas Gerais, asks the population for caution. According to him, it is important to check the weather forecast, especially when visiting new places, and to know if there are usually floods in that area. “People should not go through flooded areas or go to vulnerable places. These are the main factors to prevent accidents ”, he adds.
Free weather forecast sent by SMS
One of the quick and free ways to follow the weather forecast is through text messages. Civil Defense provides the service to the population. Simply send the CEP number by SMS to number 40199. “Our alert system sends preventive information and messages about the possibility of storms,” says the major.
“The registration must be done by everyone. It is a way for the population to stay informed. We have a million registered, ”he says. 600 reports of so-called “severe events” have already been submitted this rainy season.
The Civil Defense reiterates the orientation to avoid going to waterfalls in the rainy season, in addition to not underestimating the strength of waterfalls, streams or headwaters.
The sad accident this weekend, which occurred in Capitólio, which resulted in the death of two people, in addition to 16 others rescued alive, unfortunately repeats other very similar tragedies that occurred in previous years. “The head of water is a very common phenomenon from December to January. Last year something similar happened in Iguapé, with three victims. Last year there was another event in the city of São João Batista do Glória, at the same time of year ”, recalls the specialist in disaster management.
Some tips from the Civil Defense:
– avoid crossing the flood zone
– avoid going to vulnerable places
– pay special attention to floods and landslides
– be vigilant: don’t ignore or underestimate the strength of the water
– view the weather forecast
– know the place before being visited
– if the rain increases, identify safe ways to leave the site
