In the final stretch of one of the fiercest elections in Recife’s history, federal deputies and cousins João Campos (PSB) and Marília Arraes (PT), great-grandson and granddaughter of the former Pernambuco governor Miguel Arraes, respectively, led a debate with few proposals, numerous attacks and clashes for religious reasons.

In the first block, Marília asked Campos about the seven Federal Police operations in Recife City Hall, led by Geraldo Julio (PSB), who are investigating diversions of public resources destined to combat the pandemic.

“Marília insists on making a hate speech. The candidate is João Campos. Let’s compare the PSB with the PT. Here I propose to compare the management of João da Costa with Geraldo Julio, to compare our mandates, our public life. While being accused of having a ghost employee, I made a public selection for my office, ”Campos said.

The PSB candidate declared that there is no official of his party convicted of corruption. “In relation to the PT, it cannot be on the fingers of both hands how many jailed executives there are in Brazil,” said the pessebista.

In response, Marília said that corruption was very close to Campos’ door. “Corruption is right on your doorstep. The CFO of the Health Department is your personal friend. I am not the one who has assets blocked by the court. You know very well who he is.”

During the debate, Campos insisted that Marília needed to explain herself about the investigation of administrative impropriety at the Pernambuco Public Ministry.

She replied that she has already been acquitted. In 2017, at the head of Decasp (Police Crimes Against the Administration and Public Services), delegate Patrícia Domingos (Pode), who ranked fourth in these elections, investigated the PT and prosecuted her on suspicion of the crime of embezzlement .

At the request of the Public Ministry, the Justice closed the investigation due to lack of evidence. In the civil court, with respect to the same fact, there was a split to determine administrative impropriety. Since 2019 ended, the court issued a summons, on Tuesday (24), for Marília to be notified.

Campos invested in antipetism. He harshly criticized the PT’s management in Recife. He stated that at the time the party ruled the capital of Pernambuco, the city was abandoned, with garbage everywhere.

In response, Marília recalled that when the PT commanded the city, it was not the acronym. He also said that the PSB was part of the three movements of the PT, including the deputy of former mayor João da Costa (PT).

He also recalled that the PT occupies the first echelon of the government of Paulo Câmara (PSB), an ally of João Campos. Until October, the party was under the command of Mayor Geraldo Julio’s Secretary of Sanitation, who also supports Campos.

The PT candidate accused her cousin of spreading apocryphal posters throughout the city. He asked for a right of reply, but it was not granted. The Electoral Justice has been summoned, but the author has not yet been identified.

Campos said that Marília’s candidacy was managed by the PT board in São Paulo and spoke of “big shots in the party.

“They don’t send me and they never put a halter on me. Unlike João Campos, who everyone knows, he doesn’t even have the experience to run a city,” he said.

Much of the confrontation between the two was dominated by religious issues. Marília said PSB attacked her faith by mentioning that it was against the Bible.

“There were 15 trials that we won in court against the PSB for the lies broadcast on television. I thank God that my daughter is not old enough to understand these attacks, but the truth will win, ”said the candidate.

The PSB candidate replied that he never attacked anyone’s faith. “We put on a speech that she made. The one who wanted to take the Bible (from City Hall) and fight with her was her.

The PT candidate stated that the Electoral Court had the propaganda about the Bible removed from the air because it understood that she was a liar. In response, Campos pointed out that the TRE-PE (Pernambuco Regional Electoral Tribunal) had reversed the situation.

In the last block, Marília said that when she began her public life, her cousin was still in school. In response, the PSB candidate stated that the speech was biased. “What’s the problem with being young?” He asked.

In final statements, the PT recalled that its strong positions are not arrogant. “From my party, I am the new one. It is not arrogance. It is firmness ”.

He hinted that he is a victim of sexist assaults. “It is not easy to see a woman firm in her attitudes. If she enters asking for permission, no one opens it, no. The bad moment for PSB is over. The future is with us,” he said.

Campos ended the debate by declaring that he felt ready to be Mayor of Recife. “The journey that brought me here was one of much struggle and challenge.”

He said that the feeling of change is always natural in people. “Everyone always wants to change. But you have to move forward, look to the future with optimism.”

The PSB candidate asked that people not stop voting.
