On Monday, President Jair Bolsonaro defended the return of soccer in the country. In an interview in front of the Palácio da Alvorada, in Brasilia, the representative stated that the federal government is working in search of the return of sports activities. National, regional and state soccer championships were suspended in March due to isolation measures taken in the face of the new coronavirus pandemic.

– If it depends on my vote, I approve it. Logically, with the technical advice of the Ministry of Health, I think it will be favorable. Start training. Start at the beginning with closed doors (…). As for us, we will do things with great responsibility, with the opinion of the Ministry of Health. The soccer authorities have already contacted me. It is working in this direction there – said the president.

Bolsonaro again discussed the need to resume economic activities in the country and cited soccer as an example. Relaxation in isolation measures has been the banner championed by the president throughout the pandemic.

– Flamengo and Palmeiras have a payroll close to R $ 15 million reais. Second division teams, part of which will be extinguished. It seems to me, as reported, that they are making arrangements to earn 60%, 50%, 40% of what they earn. Because there is no recipe, no image, no television. Box office, there will not be. It is a concern. The worst will not be the virus. It will be the post-virus, with the destruction of work – Bolsonaro said.

The president said that he has been in frequent contact with the Special Secretary for Sport, Marcelo Magalhães, to address the issue of the resumption of sports activities in Brazil. Jair Bolsonaro also revealed that he recently spoke to a soccer coach who also said he was in favor of returning to the games.

– Marcelo, Secretary of Sports, today I spoke with him. We took another step in this direction (going back to sports activities in the country). Tomorrow, we should talk again. I spoke to a soccer coach this weekend from Rio Grande do Sul. At first it was favorable without games, due to the crowds in the locker room. Many people. Now it is favorable. He just doesn’t have to leave so many people in the locker room, said the president, who was questioned, but declined to reveal who the coach in question would be.

Also on Monday, the special secretary for Productivity, Employment and Competitiveness of the Ministry of Economy, Carlos da Costa, reinforced that the federal government has been working for the return of football and said he believed the return would be “soon”.

Requested by the GloboEsporte.com report, CBF reported that it maintains frequent contact with the Ministry of Health and state health departments, to assess when it will be possible to restart soccer activities.
