BRASILIA – The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), was excited to finish his term. Maia cried as she began a closing speech of her four and a half years at the helm. The speech came just before the vote that he should choose his successor.

He said he “prepared” not to cry, but could not resist:
– I begin by telling the candidates for deputies – he said interrupted by tears – that only one of you will have the enormous honor of presiding over the Chamber of Deputies. Honor I had. I braced myself not to cry, but I can’t.
– Honor that I had during the last four years and seven months, where I had the opportunity to get to know my country better through (crying) each of you, through dialogues, through visits that I made with some of you, through of conversations in the residence of the Chamber.

He cited the achievements of the Chamber of Deputies in recent years, highlighting the work in the pandemic in the approval of the PEC (Proposal for Amendment to the Constitution) of the War Budget and said that now he will be proud to be part of the “plain” – synonymous with “lower clergy” in the House.
– From that choice, the past is left behind. And we will need, together, and I on the plain, in full, with great pride, with each one of you, to build the future of Brazil. Not for the next two years, but for the next 20 years.
Faced with the latest disagreements between him and Arthur Lira (PP-AL), a rival candidate from his bloc, who supports Baleia Rossi (MDB-SP), Maia preached conciliation and said he respected all his peers.
