The coordinator of the São Paulo government’s covid-19 contingency center, doctor João Gabbardo, said that only with the Coronavac vaccine, produced by the Butantan Institute, Brazil will not be able to achieve the immunization of the majority of the population.
“This will depend on the production of vaccines, Bio Manguinhos [Fiocruz] will do with AstraZeneca. Only with Coronavac we will probably not be able to be self-sufficient, “Gabbardo declared this afternoon, in an interview with CNN.
The coordinator said that the Ministry has guaranteed 100 million doses by the end of the year. To vaccinate 150 million people, he said, more vaccines will be needed, considering that they are given in two doses.
“The Ministry of Health has a purchase made through a consortium [internacional], has the production of AstraZeneca. It is possible that by the end of the year there will be this amount of dose, but only with Butantan it is not possible, we have to have other alternatives, “he said.
Gabbardo also commented on the federal government’s request, which confirmed the purchase of 54 million additional doses of Coronavac after pressure from governors and mayors. The intention of the portfolio headed by Minister Eduardo Pazuello is to sign the contract for the acquisition of new doses of the vaccine against covid-19 until Friday (5).
He said the Butantan Institute needed guarantees. “It seemed that this purchase would be linked to some other acquisitions that the ministry was waiting for. For that reason, the government caused a deadline for this negotiation, asked that this be resolved.”
