– The expectation is that we can send the vaccine between January and February to start production. The Sanitary Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) will supervise the entire process. Therefore, we expect the immunization process (in Brazil) to begin in the first quarters of 2021 – said Nísia Trindade Lima. – Immunization will be one of the processes to begin to change the impact of this pandemic that has affected the entire society.

The statement was made after a ceremony for the Day of the Dead, attended by 50 people at the Cemitério da Penitência, in Caju, Rio de Janeiro. The pyre was inaugurated, the “Flame of Hope”, which will only go out when a vaccine is discovered. Part of the flames were taken to Fiocruz.

Coronavirus: ‘We risk having the vaccine in Brazil’, says president of Fiocruz

– The flame in Fiocruz means confidence in the work of science, illumination for the work of all research in our institution. We are working with science so that this message of hope comes from testing and the vaccine. The role of Fiocruz is to carry out scientific research, strengthen our Unified Health System (SUS) and produce doses – added Nísia Trindade.

Responsibility

The act was carried out by the Archbishop of Rio, Dom Orani João Tempesta, who affirmed that the church supports science for the production and distribution of vaccines against the new coronavirus. The cardinal said that “each person has the freedom” to accept or not the immunization, however, he asked the population to be vaccinated.

– It is not up to us to judge people for their freedoms. We must pray that we can have the vaccine and those who believe in the validity of the vaccine, can receive and be immunized. The church has never been against the vaccine and we encourage the immunization of children and adults. But each one knows his own life and responsibility – said Orani.

During the homily, the priest spoke of hope, faith and perseverance. He also affirmed that “life does not end with death and that the relatives of the victims of Covid-19 must have confidence in better days. Many of those at the death ceremony were unable to bury their relatives.

– This is a day in which we have to show solidarity with so many people who suffer that year: with families who have lost their loved ones, who could not attend the funeral and give it to God. (That’s why) we say mass. We believe that life does not end with death. We pray, because even those who are dead are alive in God. May people who have lost loved ones continue with their lives taking all precautions.

The archbishop spoke about the pyre:

– We had the opportunity to light the pyre, the light. Part of it goes to Fiocruz, where we pray that our scientists enlighten themselves to discover the vaccine.
